It was on:
…
h1. Remove toner: Reuse paper
…
_Thomas A. M. Counsell_
…
h2. Abstract
…
This thesis reports on experiments into whether abra-
sives, lasers or solvents can remove ordinary black toner-
print from ordinary white office paper in a way that leaves
the paper reusable. If it could be ‘un-printed’ then waste
office-paper could be reused immediately, without the need
for recycling.
…
Paper and board consumption causes approximately
1% of man-made climate change gas emissions. Estimates
in the first chapter suggest that un-printing could reduce
emissions per tonne of office paper by up to 95% – greater
than the potential from incineration, localisation, annual
fibre, fibre recycling, un-printing or electronic paper.
…
There has been no academic work on un-printing, but
some relevant patents have been filed. The second chapter
reviews these patents according to whether they remove,
obscure or de-colour the original print. It is not clear from
the patents whether toner-print can be removed by abra-
sives, lasers, or solvents without rendering the paper un-
usable. These three approaches are tested experimentally
and the results reported in chapters 3, 4 & 5.
…
Abrasives can remove toner-print with limited dam-
age to the underlying paper by operating in an adhesive
wear regime. This involves making ten passes with a fine
P800 abrasive rubbing at high speeds (6 m/s) and low loads
(0.3 N). Longer wavelength lasers are able to remove the
toner-print and leave blank paper undamaged by operating
at 1 W and 10 kHz in the 1064 nm wavelength and scanning
across the surface eight times at 400 mm/s. Unfortunately
the paper beneath the print is yellowed during removal.
A 40:60 mixture chloroform and dimethylsulfoxide effec-
tively dissolves toner without dissolving paper if agitated
with ultrasound for four minutes.
…
Chapter 6 outlines the research required to make the
approaches feasible replacements for conventional paper re-
cycling. The abrasive approach requires research into ex-
tending abrasive life. The laser approach requires research
into avoiding paper yellowing. The solvent approach re-
quires research into benign solvents and solvent recycling.
All three approaches would need to be tested on a wider
range of prints and papers.
…
…
Content was also deleted
[[ insert publications ]]
…
Content was also deleted

[[ insert my publications ]]
…
The hypothesis of this project is that it may be possible to overcome these problems by using a different approach to removing ink that does not damage the paper and could be operated within and office. A machine suitable for an office of about 70 people would need to be able to clean the print off about 1.5 tonnes of paper a year, at a rate of one sheet every minute and a half, at a total cost of less than 1400 a year (implying a maximum capital cost of around 7000).
…
The work is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Councill (EPSRC).
Roads good for the environment

But what does "Better" mean in this context? Looking at the Norwegian [[study => http://www.erf.be/images/Environmental_consequences_of_better_roads_English_Summary.pdf ]] that the report cites as its source, better seems to mean 'quicker for cars'.
…
Content was also deleted
They then go and ruin it by trying to claiming that that "The same [Norwegian] study indicated that in a majority of cases, the changes [more road capacity] did not generate new car trips, putting an end to one of the most enduring transport myths"

I'm not sure that myth can be put to an end, given the (English summary) of the study says: "The results of the study show that we get a substantial growth in car traffic when the capacity of the congested urban motorway is increased by one extra lane ... and the results more or less emphasizes the “old truth” that when cities are larger than a certain size, it is more or less impossible to solve the traffic problems by increasing the road capacities."
…
Content was also deleted
----

Two other points of note:

…
h1. Roads "good for the environment"

So runs the headline in a WBCSD news item on a [[new report => http://www.erf.be/images/IRF_BPC_on_Sustainable_Roads_April_2007.pdf ]] funded, unsurprisingly enough, by the [[European Road Federation => http://www.erf.be]].

It is interesting what a difference a word makes. The actual press release makes the slightly less controversial claim: "Better roads good for the environment".

But what does "Better" mean in this context? Looking at the Norwegian [[main study => http://www.erf.be/images/Environmental_consequences_of_better_roads_English_Summary.pdf ]] that the report cites as its source, better seems to mean 'quicker for cars'.

So a more appropriate headline might have been "traffic is bad for the environment" which I think we can all agree on, and perhaps even shorten: "traffic is bad".

So much for headlines.

The headline that I think the European Road Federation were grasping for was "less road capacity does not mean less pollution", unless less roads results in less cars. A useful point.

They then go and ruin it by trying to claiming that that "The same [Norwegian] study indicated that in a majority of cases, the changes [more road capacity] did not generate new car trips, putting an end to one of the most enduring transport myths", which seems extreme given that the (English summary) of the study says: "The results of the study show that we get a substantial growth in car traffic when the capacity of the congested urban motorway is increased by one extra lane ... and the results more or less emphasizes the “old truth” that when cities are larger than a certain size, it is more or less impossible to solve the traffic problems by increasing the road capacities.". For other types of road they indicate that better roads will speed cars and buses equally and so make no change in traffic. Bit of a bold assertion I think.

* The independent Norwegian study was paid for by the Norwegian Road Federation

* The other suggestions in the European Road Federation report look sensible: take into account the environmental impact of new roads, build them in more environmentally sound ways.
…
Put / Update
…

h2. Post / Create

Creating a record doesn't work, as @Person.save@ currently goes straight to the put method.
…
Content was also deleted
h1. Early experiences with Active Resource

Last updated 22:05 BST Fri 30 June

At the recent RailsConf David Heinemeier Hansson announced his ideas for an active resource library in [[rails => http://www.rubyonrails.com ]]. His slides are available [[ here => http://www.loudthinking.com/lt-files/worldofresources.pdf ]].

Unfortunately the early version he checked into the [[ rails edge repository => http://dev.rubyonrails.org/browser/trunk/activeresource ]] doesn't quite match his slides.

Below are my (in progress) notes on getting it to work.

h2. Pre-requisites

You need edge rails: @rake rails:freeze:edge@

You need some rest-ful type routes. I've used: @script/plugin install simply_restful@

You need a controller that has the same name as your model (e.g. PeopleController) with index, new, create, show, edit, update and delete methods. Each of these needs to respond sensibly to xml requests, e.g.:

def show
@patch = Patch.find(params[:id])
respond_to do |format|
format.html
format.xml { render :xml => @patch.to_xml }
end
end

h2. Initialization

The example that DHH gave:

Person = ActiveResource::Struct.new do |person|
person.uri = "http://api.myremote.com/people"
person.credentials :name => "me", :password => "password"
end

What works in the code:

Person = ActiveResource::Struct.create
Person.site = "http://api.myremote.com/people"

h2. Get

You can then get the object, as expected:

p = Person.find 1

h2. Put / Post / Update

Saving doesn't work, because ActiveResource doesn't set the content-type. Adding this at the start of the request method in [[ActiveResource::Connection => http://dev.rubyonrails.org/browser/trunk/activeresource/lib/active_resource/connection.rb#L60]] seems to help:

arguments << { 'content-type' => 'application/xml' }

…
Content was also deleted
content moved to [[]]
…
Content was also deleted
Last updated 22:05 BST Fri 30 June

…

h2.
